Coming off Barnegat’s best season in the program’s six years, head coach Rob Davis expects his squad to remain competitive in Shore Conference Class B South, which the Bengals won last season with a 4-1 divisional record.
Here’s what Davis had to say about his team:
Q: Last season, Mark McCoy, a senior, replaced Nick SanGiacomo after being the backup for several years, but you don’t have that luxury this season. So who’s the quarterback?
A: Cinjun Erskine just transferred from Holy Spirit. He’s going to be our quarterback, but he can’t play for 30 days. But we have two good kids we’re really excited about. We have Pat Moran, who’s been our wide receiver the past few years and is a really good athlete. We also have a kid named Ricky Gerena, a sophomore who was our quarterback for the freshman team and has really made some great improvement during the past few weeks. We’re very confident with both those guys, and when Cinjun comes back, we’ll be even better and deeper at the position.
Q: Who’s going to be running the ball this season?
A: Our two running backs this season are going to be A.J. Opre and Mark Magoon, both are juniors, very tough runners and hard-nosed football players. But we also have sophomore Tyler McGuinness and Ed Santiago as a senior who will be back there. We have four quality kids who we’re confident can do the job.
Q: What are the goals for this season?
A: Our goals are the same as every other year. The hardest part is to create a winning atmosphere, and we’ve experienced some success the past couple of years, and we just want to keep going with that. We told these kids that it’s their turn now to make plays. We won a lot of close games last year, and I think our kids are excited about this season. But you never know with 14-, 15-, 16-year-old kids. You never know what they’re going to do week in and week out. But we think the level of play is going to be pretty exciting for us.
