Both teams hung crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. The six runs that the New Holstein baseball team scored bettered Campbellsport’s three and that was the difference in an 8-5 New Holstein EWC road win Tuesday evening.
The fifth started well for New Holstein (5-14, 4-10) with a pair of walks and a hit and got even better when Chris Greuel delivered a two-run single to right field. Morgan Freund and Brady Schmitz both drove in a run later in the inning with a single, while a fielding error and a wild pitch plated the Huskies’ other two runs in the frame. Greuel, Schmitz and Adam Schmitz each had two hits.
Campbellsport pulled three runs back in the bottom of the inning with two scoring on a fielder’s choice groundout to the shortstop and another on a dropped fly ball. Cole Sippel was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple in the seventh for the Cougars.
New Holstein’s winning pitcher Dominic Probst preserved the lead. He struck out five and allowed six hits in a complete-game win. Jake Blatz also went the distance to suffer the loss for the Cougars (3-13, 3-10).
