Beech's Hurd scores 4 more TDs

WHITE HOUSE

The Beech Buccaneers wanted to prove that they’re more than just a one-player offense.

Half of their six touchdowns came on passes, although Jalen Hurd did find the end zone four times in a 42-0 victory over White House (2-3) on Friday night.

Hurd, who sat down during the second half, finished with 145 yards on 13 carries — a season low. He added a 30-yard TD reception on a screen pass from Lincoln Kenitzer in the second quarter.

The Bucs (6-0) took to the air in an effort to save the state’s leading rusher from wear and tear in a game they controlled throughout.

“We have to mix it up some and take pressure off of him,” Beech coach Anthony Crabtree said. “We’re going to face some tough teams down the stretch and we’ll need the balance.”

Hurd did his damage in the first quarter, scoring on the game’s fifth play when he took a pitch to the left side and outran defenders for a 47-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the game.

Hurd added scoring runs of 3 and 20 yards in the opening minutes, making the score 21-0 when the first quarter ended.

White House coach Jeff Porter, a 30-year coaching veteran, called Hurd the best running back he’s ever seen in his career.

“He’s a special player,” Porter said. “But he also has a lot of people around him, too.”

His supporting cast played a big role in the victory, including quarterbacks Kenitzer and Parker Henry, who combined to throw for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

Henry threw a scoring strike to Dametris Watson, a 45-yarder caught by the senior in the final minute of the first half. He also tossed a 46-yarder to Alec Meadows in the third quarter to make it 42-0. By that time, the running clock was in effect and the game quickly ended.

“The passing game really opened up for us tonight,” Henry said. “They were watching (Hurd) to see where he was going and it gave us some options.”

Kris Sykes and Kevin Head each intercepted a pass.

White House’s best bid to avoid the shutout failed when kicker Chase Dunlap missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt in the final seconds.
