Les Berry is back on the bench at Schalick High School as he recently landed the varsity girls’ basketball head coaching job.
Schalick athletic director Mike Clarke announced the hiring on Monday night. Berry said he was approved by the school board in June.
Berry, a special education teacher at the school, was a longtime assistant at Schalick under Sean Collins. When Collins stepped down, Berry coached the Cougars to an eight-win season in 2007-08. He spent the last two years as an assistant coach under Collins at Paulsboro.
“I’m excited for this opportunity,” said Berry, who lives in Woodstown with his wife and two daughters. “It’s going to be a challenge and that’s exactly what I’m looking for at this time.”
Berry was a standout swimmer at Millville High School where he graduated in 1990 before attending the University of Kentucky.
He takes over for Mary Brown, who retired after 23 years as coach and was one of the school’s most heralded athletes. Brown guided the Cougars to a Tri-County Conference basketball championship in her first year and accumulated 164 wins during her tenure.
