BGA uses turnovers to win

In a turnover-filled matchup Thursday, Battle Ground Academy capitalized and Pearl-Cohn didn’t as the host Wildcats picked up a 16-12 win.

Pearl-Cohn’s first fumble ended its first possession, at the BGA 41-yard line, and Keenan Bass immediately took advantage. Bass took a handoff from Tucker Beathard and scored on the next play to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

Reives Berry intercepted a Mario Gordon pass at the BGA 22 to stop another Firebird drive, and after Gordon was unable to convert a fourth-and 16 situation, BGA extended the lead to 14-0 two minutes into the second quarter on an 18-yard pass from Beathard to Jordan Tutler.

Pearl-Cohn, which actually outgained the hosts in the opening half, finally got on the scoreboard with three minutes remaining in the second quarter as sophomore Ke’Shawn Vaughn broke a 46-yard run for a touchdown. However, the next Firebird possession ended on a fumbled punt snap and an eventual safety as time expired in the half.

The two teams combined for four turnovers in the third quarter — two fumbles and an interception for BGA, a fumble for Pearl-Cohn — but the Firebirds were unable to score until Deangelo Hogan blocked a Ross Grosvenor punt at the BGA 26.

From there, Pearl-Cohn moved to the 1-yard line and Josh Montgomery scored to make it a 16-12 game with five minutes remaining. The Firebird defense held and a bad punt snap gave the offense possession inside BGA’s 20.

On first-and-goal at the 5, Montgomery fumbled to thwart Pearl-Cohn’s chance for a go-ahead score.

Bass finished with 116 rushing yards for BGA, Vaughn with 126 for Pearl-Cohn.

Shorthanded: Goodpasture will be without some of its players for tonight’s game with visiting Pope John Paul II — and possibly longer.

Coach David Martin and President Ricky Perry both confirmed that there have been disciplinary actions taken at the school that have included some members of the football team.

“There have been violations of school policy involving students,” Perry said.
