Bodamer breaks passing record, Booker has big night

There have been a lot of great high school quarterbacks to come through Western Pennsylvania. George Blanda, Jim Kelly, Johnny Lujack, Joe Namath, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, and Johnny Unitas, come to mind. None of them threw for as many yards in high school as Port Allegany’s Matt Bodamer.

Bodamer became the state’s all-time leading passer with a 347-yard, five-touchdown effort in a 55-20 defeat of Brockway (Pa.) on Friday. He has 9,787 career yards, topping the old record of 9,752, set by Derek Buganz of Brockway last season. He also added to his state record for career touchdown passes that he set earlier this season.

The son of Port Allegany coach Mike Bodamer, Matt has helped the Gators, who play in Class A, the smallest division in the state, to a 9-0 record. Bodamer’s numbers might be even bigger but Port Allegany was more run-oriented his first two years of high school. The last two seasons, however, the Gators use a variation of Mike Leach’s Air Raid full-spread shotgun offense.

“Now, we have seven or eight kids who can really catch the ball,” Mike Bodamer said. “In this area, a lot of teams run the old three yards and a cloud of dust, so they’re not used to seeing this offense.”
