The Flying Dutchmen preserved an undefeated Central Lakeshore Conference record early in the season with a heavy-handed 54-37 win on the road at Howards Grove Tuesday.

Josiah VerVelde scored a game-high 28 points — 22 of which came in the opening half — to help Oostburg improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CLC.

“VerVelde dominated the first half,” Howards coach Mark Christenson said. “… He played very well.”

Ethan Brinkman led the Tigers (2-2, 1-1 CLC) with 17 points, a dozen of which came from behind the 3-point arc.

Sheb. Christian 61, Trinity Academy 50

The Eagles blew ahead in the second quarter after switching to a zone defense that took the visiting Trinity Academy off guard.

And after cleaning up their turnover margin after halftime — the Eagles coughed up the ball 18 times in the first half, and only five times in the second half — Sheboygan Christian held on for a healthy 61-50 win.

“We couldn’t play man-to-man defense in the first quarter, so we switched to a zone and they weren’t ready for it,” Eagles coach Brett Flipse said after the game, which saw both teams remain even through eight minutes before Christian tore ahead for a 27-18 halftime lead.

Caleb Kelley led Christian on offense with 16 points, and was complemented by double-digit scorers Josh Stecker (15 points) and Andy Koerber (12).

“It was a good win,” Flipse said.

“They sat in a zone and we just were careless with the ball,” Flipse added of his team’s early turnover woes. “They play hard, and I think they out-hustled us for much of the first half.”

“Our bench played well tonight,” Plymouth coach Jason Duff said. “A lot more even distribution. It’s good to get our bench guys some time, they put in a lot of hard work in practice and they do everything we ask them to do.”

Tom Jankowski had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Plymouth while Cory Unger had three steals and three assists. Jordan Mueller and Clay Henning each added seven points.
