At halftime of Friday night’s Sheboygan Christian-Sheboygan Lutheran showdown, Eagles coach Brett Flipse told his players they needed to play defense.

After allowing the Crusaders to score 43 first-half points — 24 in the second quarter alone — Christian tightened up, allowing just 26 points after intermission in a 71-69 Central Lakeshore Conference win at Christian.

“I told (our guys) … these kids can shoot,” Flipse said.

Josh Stecker, Kyle Stecker and Caleb Kelley spearheaded Christian’s offensive attack, combining for 53 points.

“Kyle Stecker played a good game,” Flipse said. “We need to have that third guy and tonight he got the job done.”

In addition to the scoring, the Josh Stecker grabbed eight rebounds, Kyle Stecker added seven and Kelley pulled down six boards.

Tyler Zastrow led Lutheran (5-2, 4-1) with 25 points, but leading scorer Jacob Jurss was held to just 10 points — eight below his average (18.2).

Jurss picked up two fouls in the first quarter and spent the remainder of the half on the bench. He also sat for a stretch in the fourth quarter after picking up his fourth foul.

“We keyed on (Jurss),” Flipse said. “And we told Brady Otte, ‘You guard Zastrow with as little help as possible.’ (Zastrow) scored, he got to the basket.”

Once Christian took care of business on the defensive end, the Eagles made the most of their opportunities on offense.

“We shot the ball really well tonight,” added Flipse. “We shot 60 percent from the floor. Good shots were made, we hit a couple 3s.

“It was a great win.”
