The ninth-ranked Okemos boys’ tennis team advanced to the Division 2 state final by finishing as the runner-up to No. 1-ranked Midland Dow at Thursday’s regional.
The Chiefs finished in second place in all four singles finals and in two of the doubles finals. Dow won all eight events at East Lansing High School.
“Getting all of the singles players through to the championship round is just a great team effort,” said Okemos coach Chris Silker.
The four Okemos singles players that advanced to the finals were junior Elan Dantus, freshman Jordan Jacobsen, junior Mazen Oweiss and sophomore Nickhil Pasula.
Dantus fell to Dow senior John Templeman in the final of the top singles flight, 6-0, 6-1. Templeman lost just nine games in three matches.
Despite the loss in the final, Dantus was one of several Chiefs that did what they needed to on Thursday.
“We normally step up around this time, which is great,” Dantus said. “We’re playing well right now.”
The Okemos doubles players to reach the final were the team of junior Steven Wu and junior Ritwik Bisaws in the second flight and the team of junior Kevin Hutsell and sophomore Ross Lazar in the fourth flight.
Meanwhile, tournament host East Lansing made the final round in two of eight events.
One of those was the top doubles final, where seniors Chad McFee and Sam Cawood fell to Dow juniors Jason Chang and Vikram Shanker, 6-1, 6-4.
Unlike Okemos, the Trojans did not play well enough to advance to the Division 2 state final.
Meanwhile, The Chiefs will play their final matches in the state tournament at Holly and Fenton a week from today.
