Preseason rankings

Division I

1. Chandler Hamilton: Six starters and good depth return for defending state champions.

2. Phoenix Brophy Prep: State runner-up will miss Riggs Lennon, now with RSL-AZ, but always has enough firepower to win.

3. Tolleson: A good defense will allow Mario Soto and Jeremy Steiner to attack at will.

4. Phoenix Carl Hayden: Plays the game as beautiful as any team. If it can finish, watch out. Five returning starters.

5. Gilbert: Four players return for last season’s state quarter-finalist.

6. Phoenix Maryvale: Talented sophomore midfielder Jose Hernandez returns to power 2012 state quarter-finalist.

7. San Luis: 10 returning starters have one thing in mind: score goals.

8. Desert Vista: Seven senior starters return. Otherwise a young team.

9. Scottsdale Chaparral: Graduated 12 seniors from last season’s top-seeded state semifinal team.

10. Glendale Ironwood: Players from an JV team that was undefeated the last two seasons join six returning starters. Chandler is one team of many that just missed the top 10.

Division II

1. Tucson Salpointe Catholic: Defending state champions return 18 players but are dealing with some injuries.

2. Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep: 2012 state runner-up graduated just seven players.

3. Tucson Catalina Foothills: Could be best defense in division; seven starters return for 2012 semifinalist.

4. Buckeye Verrado: Seven senior starters have led program to 57 wins through last three seasons.

5. Glendale Apollo: Six starters return. One who isn’t is goal-scoring machine Eric Carbajal (35 goals last season), now playing for an academy team in Mexico.

6. Phoenix Washington: Nine starters return. Will again dominate possession, which needs to end in goals.

7. Nogales: Will miss last season’s deep senior talent but always in the hunt.

8. Phoenix Greenway: Returns 12 players who were on last season’s state quarterfinalist team.

9. Bullhead City Mohave: Top scorers graduated but returns a large senior class.

10. Tempe Marcos de Niza: Only six players return from last season’s surprise team.

Division III

1. Scottsdale Coronado: Young, dangerous team now experienced after finishing state runner-up. Returns nine starters.

2. Phoenix Cortez: State champs graduated 12 players from last season, including Player of the Year, but can’t count out coach Jose Corona.

3. Douglas: Well-balanced team returns seven starters. New GK as big shoes/gloves to fill.

4. Chandler Seton Catholic: Last season’s top seed and state semifinalist lost just two players to graduation.

5. Phoenix Northwest Christian: Loses six starters but midfielder Riley Fitzgerald returns as do the Brothers Martin (Pete and Elliot).

6. Glendale Cactus: Missing two key players due to injury and club but still has seven starters retuning.

7. Tucson Palo Verde: Could surprise again this season with seven starters returning but must find goalkeeper.

8. Tucson Catalina: Almost a brand new defense but still talented. Five starters return.

9. Cottonwood Mingus: Small team is strong in possession. Four starters return to erase last season’s surprise first-round exit.

10. Fountain Hills: Just one starter returns for a team that will still have a good attack.
