Brevard bowlers on roll in state tourney

Eau Gallie’s Michael Coffey and Edgewood’s David Lance are two of the six bowlers still in contention to win the FHSAA State Bowling Championship at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.

Both have elimination-round matchups today at 10:06 a.m. and should both win, they would face off an hour later.

Brevard teams fared well in qualifying as four of the top nine boys teams were local, as were the top three boys individuals. Cocoa’s Kyle Johnson led after four qualifying games with 1,027 pins, followed by Greg Young of Viera (1,022) and defending champion Coffey (974).

Viera was third in team qualifying on Wednesday with a total score of 4,077. Also qualifying were fifth-place Eau Gallie (3,987), eighth-place Merritt Island (3,951) and Bayside (3,941).

Each team is still alive and Eau Gallie will face off with Merritt Island in an elimination-round matchup this morning.

The top girls team was Eau Gallie, in 11th. Heritage, 14th after the first day, also qualified for bracket play.

Titusville’s Tess Puhak was the final area bowler eliminated as she fell in Round 4 in girls individual bracket play. She qualified with an 843 score, good for sixth overall.
