Brian McCallum: Melbourne-Satellite football game looks like a good one

By

Unlike college football, there is not a rash of warm-up games at the high school level. While the Gators and Seminoles play relative weaklings this weekend, just about every game on our high school schedule in Brevard looks competitive.

Some look like Florida on presidential election night, but we pick even the too-close-too-call games in this spot each week. If you’ll be watching the Palm Bay-Rockledge game at McLarty Stadium with me on Friday, follow www.floridatoday.com/highschoolsports for updates of what looks increasingly like a barnburner.

Satellite at Melbourne: The Scorpions are getting touted by coaches across the county as a team that will be significantly improved this season. They shut out their opponents in the spring and in Friday’s preseason game, but this week counts.

Melbourne’s offense produced only a field goal against Sebastian River, so look for the Bulldogs to come out with a point to make this week. Even then, this might not be decided until the fourth quarter. FLORIDA TODAY pick: Melbourne.

Heritage at Space Coast: At first glance, the Panthers are the bigger, faster team with more bodies and should win handily. Yet, the Vipers also won their preseason game in a blowout. This one will be closer than that first glance, but the outcome is the same. FLORIDA TODAY pick: Heritage.

MCC at Cocoa Beach: Like points? This may be your game. When the Minutemen invaded the Hustlers’ stadium last year and won by 37 points, it was a surprise. It will be no surprise if this game produces 80 points, but we’ll go with the home team. FLORIDA TODAY pick: Cocoa Beach.

Pine Ridge at Titusville: The Terriers will open at home and try to create some momentum. FLORIDA TODAY pick: Titusville.

St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.) vs. Cocoa: The Philadelphia team visits the Tigers at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. They scrimmaged powerful Don Bosco of New Jersey just two weeks ago, so the Hawks won’t be intimidated. They won’t win either. FLORIDA TODAY pick: Cocoa.
