Brian McCallum: Prep football schedule promises thrills

By

When Bayside plays Oviedo, and Holy Trinity plays Warner Christian tonight — both in preseason games — they will be outside Brevard County. Yet, each gives a bit of a taste of what the 2012 high school football season will hold for fans in the area.

The schedule is attractive for its toughness.

Cocoa is the first team to bring a state championship contender to town. American Heritage of Delray Beach won the 3A title last year and is ranked No. 1 this week. That game is Saturday at noon.

The momentum builds just days later. Another defending champ, 4A Jacksonville Bolles, is at Bayside a week from today.

For football fans, the Palm Bay schedule alone is worth whatever season tickets cost. Fort Pierce Central (ranked sixth in 7A), Daytona Beach Mainland (tied for third in 6A) and regular rivals Melbourne and Bayside visit the Pirates.

The Bears, in addition to playing Bolles, will entertain Seabreeze this season, another team getting votes. Just because the Sandcrabs aren’t ranked doesn’t mean that won’t be great competition. Another of that type, Edgewater, a “receiving votes” team in 7A, is at Astronaut tonight.

Another of our own teams getting some voters’ attention, Florida Air, will host powerful North Florida Christian (first in 2A) and Warner Christian (third) later this season.

That’s only a sampling, but watch our scoreboard for the results of Holy Trinity and Bayside tonight. As for the Bears, who follow with that Bolles game and then travel to First Coast (third in 7A), head coach Derek Smith sees this preseason game the same way he sees the next few.

“I’m using the Oviedo game as an 11th game,” he said Thursday. “I’ll continue the philosophy that the only games that mean anything are district games.”

Those are coming, too. Stay tuned for some entertaining races.
