Brophy teammates Relf, Curtis commit to Florida Atlantic together

By

Phoenix Brophy Prep senior linebackers Robert Relf and Andrew Curtis decided Wednesday to jointly commit to Florida Atlantic University.

Curtis posted it on his Facebook page.

Greg Relf, Robert’s dad, forwarded me a text from Robert that read, "Just wanted to inform you Curtis and I decided to commit to FAU. We just felt like it was a good fit, and they really loved us both, and we just wanted to play football together for another 4-5 years."

Florida Atlantic offerered football scholarships to the teammates about three weeks ago.

Curtis led Brophy with 105 tackles, followed by Relf’s 102. Middle linebacker Conner Martinez also had 102 tackles.

Relf said he and Curtis met with FAU defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis on Tuesday.

"He talked about what they’re trying to do and what kind of system they run," Relf said. "They’re really excited about us, and we’re excited about them, too."

Relf said he and Curtis will take their official visit to Florida Atlantic in January. The linebackers played against each other as eighth graders, and formed a strong bond their sophomore year when they were both brought up to play varsity football.

"Me and him, we talked about playing at the college level together for a while," Relf said.

Some consider the players under-recruited, but Relf said, "That’s fine with me. We’re excited about Florida Atlantic."

Curtis was offered by Northern Illinois, Akron, South Dakota State and Ball State. Oregon had Curtis on its recruiting board but had not offered.
