MURFREESBORO — Lynn Burkey has resigned as a women’s basketball assistant coach at MTSU and accepted the girls basketball head coaching position at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

Burkey was 125-42 in five seasons at Shelbyville after he replaced current MTSU women’s coach Rick Insell at the Bedford County high school. He took two Shelbyville teams to the state tournament, including his first team which reached the finals.

Burkey, who is 181-55 as a head coach, spent two seasons at Greeneville before coming to the Middle Tennessee area. Burkey also took Greeneville to the state tournament.

Burkey spent two seasons on Insell’s staff at MTSU, replacing Tom Hodges, who left MTSU to be the head coach at Morehead State.

Burkey replaces Dan Wilkerson, who resigned after six seasons to accept an assistant coaching position at Brentwood Academy. Wilkerson finished 122-68 at MTCS, leading the Lady Cougars to four sectional appearances. MTCS has never made it to the TSSAA girls basketball state tournament.
