Capsules previewing the fall sports teams at Burlington High School:

Boys soccer

Coach: Bob Day (11th season)
Last season: 12-2-2; lost to CVU in Division I semifinals
Key returnees: Holden Blanco, midfield, senior; Salumo Felekeni, senior, forward; Renovat Ntiruvakure, senior, back; Reeves Hart, senior, midfield; Nghia Nguyen, senior, defense.
Key newcomers: Jackson Donald, junior, forward
Outlook: Metro champions from a year ago, the Seahorses should again be among the league and state contenders. A strong defense, led by Nguyen, will be a strength while the return of Reeves, who missed all of season with an injury, should help replace the graduation losses of Peter Rinkema and Claude Mumbere, the Free Press’ boys soccer player of the year.
Opener: Tuesday vs. North Country
Girls soccer</b
Coach: Jeff Hayes (sixth season)
Last season: 5-8-2; lost to Essex in Division I playdowns
Key returnees: Emma Feeney, forward, senior; Olivia Maher, goalie, senior; Kaitlin Donahue, midfield, junior; Iris Buchanan, junior, defense; Andrea Noonan, midfield, junior; Sabrina Farmer, midfield, junior; Maddie Feeney, midfield, sophomore; Kaitlin Garrison, defense, junior
Key newcomers: Too early to tell
Outlook: With 16 seasoned players returning, the Seahorses hope to make noise in the Metro this fall. BHS has depth in the midfield and experience in net with Maher and at forward with Feeney, who was part of the 2009 championship team. After a productive preseason, Hayes said the offense should be improved.
Opener: Wednesday at Rutland

Coach: Allyson Archacki (fifth season)
Last season: 2-11-3; lost to Rutland in Division I quarterfinals
Key returnees: Evelyn Schaedel, goalie, senior; Erica Lyon, midfielid, junior; Natalie Stockman, defense, senior; Nicole Raub, forward, senior.
Key newcomers: IIona Maher, defense, junior; Mallory Cross, midfield, sophomore
Outlook: While winning in the Metro Division is a challenge, the Seahorses should have confidence, based on last season’s late surge, to be competitive and, perhaps, pull out more victories.
Opener: Wednesday at Mount Mansfield
Boys cross country
Coach: Dan Hagan (eighth season)
Last season: Finished ninth at the Division I state meet
Key returnees: Jake Van Buren, junior; Lukas Adamowicz, senior; Corey Barcomb, senior; Justin Barcomb, senior
Key newcomers: Too many to tell
Outlook: The blend of promising newcomers and veterans might yield a New England berth for a program that hasn’t qualified for this regional meet in a long time, Hagan said.
Girls cross country
Coach: Dan Hagan (eighth season)
Last season: Finished eighth at the Division I state meet
Key returnees: Alexy Novelli, junior; Lucy Leith, junior
Key newcomers: Too early to tell
Outlook: With the return of five varsity runners and the addition of a big freshmen class, the Seahorses have a goal to qualify for the New England championships.
