An opportunistic defense pitched a shutout, and carried Gilbert Campo Verde past host Florence Poston Butte 28-0 in a Division III game Friday night.
Senior Brock Sanderson had a huge game on both sides of the ball with an interception and fumble recovery to go along with two offensive touchdowns.
After a scoreless first quarter that saw Sanderson capture his first turnover intercepting the ball at midfield, Campo Verde turned to Sanderson on offense as he took the ball up the middle and broke a tackle for a 6-yard score.
Tyler Mills recovered a Poston Butte fumble and returned in to the 1-yard line to set up Sanderson second touchdown, a 1-yard run in the third quarter. It was Sanderson’s only carries of the night.
“We’ve known he was a good running back,” Gilbert Campo Verde coach Max Ragsdale said. “But he does so many things for us defensively we don’t want, I don’t want to say waste him on offensive, but two touchdowns on two touches isn’t bad.”
Campo Verde’s defense forced six turnovers on the game, to put the offense in excellent position.
Following another Poston Butte fumble, recovered by Mitch Siebenaler on the 20-yard line, quarterback Brandon Turner hit senior tight end Bridger Rodoni for a 6-yard completion and Rodoni plunged his way into the end zone to give Campo Verde a two touchdown lead at the half.
Pineda also hit receiver Erick Belcher in the back of the end zone for a 13-yard score to complete the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
“We always look to be balanced on offense,” Ragsdale said. “Of course our forte is we want to pound the rock but we’re starting to come together offensively.”
Darius Williams and Marquon Claiborne chipped in with an interception and fumble recovery respectively.
Poston Butte’s lone bright spot was an interception in the second half by senior defensive back Cameron Owens.
“It wasn’t a very good effort tonight,” Poston Butte coach Mike De La Torre said. “Hopefully we’ll learn how to play tough when teams get physical, like they did tonight, we gotta learn to come back and bounce back when tough plays happen.”
