FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) — The Robinson Rams defeated rival Lake Braddock, 55-41, on Friday.
This contest was a physical game, as both teams showed up defensively.
The match-up was close in the first quarter. The Bruins started on a 6-2 run, but the Rams were able to tie the game. A steal by Ashrifi Nai-Fetton led to a fast break opportunity in which Nai-Fetton assisted a Keegan Ruddy layup. The Rams led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The game was heated, with both student sections’ chants evidence of the rivalry. At one point, Lake Braddock fans cheered: “Let’s play football” when the Rams lead was up to 10 points.
Robinson senior forward Nick Bynum hit a three-pointer with 5:33 to go in the second quarter, bringing the score to 19-12, Rams, and forcing a Bruin timeout.
Senior Keegan Ruddy hit another three-pointer to make the score 22-12, as the Rams continued to gather momentum.
Robinson took a 35-25 lead into the fourth quarter after a layup by Lake Braddock’s Vince Sica. The Rams’ press was extremely effective, forcing turnover after turnover on the Bruins. Whenever Lake Braddock would start to cut the lead, the Rams defense would come up with a big stop. Another Ruddy three-pointer made the lead 43-29.
With 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, Robinson’s lead grew to 47-31 .
The Bruins brought the score to 47-37 with three minutes to go, but the Rams were able to hold them off for a 55-41 victory.
Will Gregoritis led the Lake Braddock in scoring with 17 points, and Ruddy led the Rams with 16. Nate Hackett chipped in with 12 points of his own.
The Rams went on to play West Springfield Tuesday. Their 50-38 win brings Robinson’s record to 4-2. Lake Braddock is now 2-2 after a 57-55 loss to Herndon, also on Tuesday.
