Carmel-Warren Central rematch in playoffs one of five to watch

By

Here are five games to watch outside the Super 25:

Whitehaven (Memphis) vs. Mitchell (Memphis), Thursday

Whitehaven (8-0) has won 24 consecutive regular season games. The Tigers are led by running back Mark Dodson, who has said he will sign with the University of Mississippi. Whitehaven hasn’t allowed a point in its past two meetings with Mitchell, but Mitchell (7-1) is vastly improved this year, thanks in great part to sophomore quarterback Tomadreus Trezevant, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for a score in a 48-6 defeat of Carver (Memphis) last week.

Muskegon (Mich.) at Zeeland (Mich.) East, Friday

The 8-0 teams will be fighting for homefield advantage through the playoffs. Muskegon’s Big Red is the state’s top ranked Division II team while Zeeland East is the top-ranked Division III team. Marcus Smith leads the Big Red’s punishing ground game. The Chix are led by Spencer Viening, who ran for five touchdowns in a 55-41 come-from-behind defeat of Mona Shores last week.

Warren Central (Indianapolis) at Carmel (Ind.), Friday

It will be interesting to see how well Carmel (8-1) bounces back from its 13-7 loss to Ben Davis (Indianapolis) last week in this first-round playoff game. Warren Central (4-5) has been down but its defense  has allowed two touchdowns only once this season. Carmel barely scraped past Warren Central 10-7 on Sept. 29.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Friday

Mater Dei (6-1) is fresh off its upset of then-No. 4 Santa Margarita (Rancho Margarita) and appears to be peaking at the right time. St. John Bosco (3-4, with four wins forfeited due to an ineligible player) survived a scare last week, defeating JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 44-41 in overtime.

Alto (Texas) at West Sabine (Pineland, Texas), Friday

Two of the top teams in Texas 1A football get their biggest test this season. The alto Yellowjackets will have to find a way to slow down West Sabine’s offense, which is averaging 60 points a game. Alto can also score, based on its 61-0 defeat of Cushing last week.
