Cathedral girls move on to state golf tournament


SARTELL – The St. Cloud Cathedral girls golf team captured the Section 6-2A girls golf championship Tuesday afternoon at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell.

The Crusaders, who trailed Rocori by eight strokes, finished with a two-day team score of 682, to advance to the state meet for the first time since 2007. The state meet begins June 12 at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. Pequot Lakes was second (689), Rocori was third (690) and Becker was fourth (700).

Five golfers also advanced to the state tournament. Staples-Motley’s Emily Israelson took first with a two-day score of 152. Becker’s Kourtney Williams (153), Pequot Lakes’ Maggie Heggerston (155), Rocori’s Marja Sorenson (160) and Pequot Lakes’ Savannah Stone (164) all moved on to state.

On the boys side, Staples-Motley advanced to the Class 2A state meet with a team score of 581 to win the section title. Pequot Lakes was second (652), Melrose was third (662) and Cathedral was fourth (670).

Staples-Motley’s Michael Strain took first overall with a 143 .

The five golfers who qualified individually were Melrose’s Wesley Dickhaus (151), Albany’s Jordan LeClair (156), Becker’s Zach Johanns (159), Sauk Centre’s Robby Polipnick (160) and Cathedral’s Garret McCormick (160).

Girls team scores — 1. St. Cloud Cathedral 682; 2. Pequot Lakes 689; 3. Rocori 690; 4. Becker 700.

Boys team scores — 1. Staples-Motley 581; 2. Pequot Lakes 652; 3. Melrose 662; 4. St. Cloud Cathedral 670.


SAUK CENTRE – Moorhead won the title by shooting a new Section 8-3A record of 581 over two days to advance to the Class 3A state tournament beginning on June 12 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

Moorhead shot a second-day total of 283, which is 5-under par. The second-day total is also a section record.

Moorhead’s Bryant Buckellew took first place with a new section record of 138, which is 6-under par. His 65 on Tuesday was also a new section record and a new GreyStone Golf Club junior record.

St. Cloud Tech finished in sixth place with a two-day score of 643. No area golfers qualified individually for the state tournament.

Team scores — 1. Moorhead 581; 2. Alexandria 609; 3. Brainerd 612; 4. Buffalo 617; 5. Bemidji 624; 6. St. Cloud Tech 643.


LONG PRAIRIE – The St. Cloud Tech girls golf team came up seven strokes short of going to the Class 3A state tournament.

Alexandria advanced to the state tournament, which begins Tuesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, with a team score of 686. Tech finished with a 693 and was followed by St. Cloud Apollo (713) and Buffalo (730).

Tech’s Bobbie Bohlig was the individual champion with a two-day score of 184. Bohlig shot rounds of 82 on both days of competition. Tech’s Meagan Larkin also advanced with a score of 168 and Apollo’s Nikki Torgerson advanced with a 171.

Team scores — 1. Alexandria 686; 2. St. Cloud Tech 693; 3. St. Cloud Apollo 713; 4. Buffalo 730.
