Brielle’s Ethan Wall grabbed the first-round lead at the Lessing’s American Junior Golf Association Classic, firing an even-par 72 at Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck.
Wall, who will be a senior at Christian Brothers Academy, has a two-shot lead over Jake Shuman of Needham, Mass., Patrick Moriarty of Rockville, Md. and Cody Cox of Milford, Pa. heading into the second round of the 54-hole event.
Rumson’s Jimmy Dengler, headed for Loyola (Md.), and Vince Palazzolo, a teammate of Wall’s at CBA, are tied for eighth at 77, while Rumson’s John Edler shot 79.
In the girls division, Tinton Falls’ Taylor Totland, who won the NJSIAA individual state championship at Red Bank Catholic on this, her home course, two months ago, is tied for third with Hana Ku of Basking Ridge after posting a 75.
Anne Cheng from Torrance, Calif. and Elyse Smidinger from Crofton, Md. Share the lead at 73.
In on-site qualifying at the New Jersey State Golf Association’s William Y. Dear Junior and Boys Championship at Rumson Country Club, Mike Reilly, playing out of Howell Park, emerged as the medalist in the boys (15-under) division with a 3-over-par 74.
In the junior (18-16) division, Roy Brook’s Chris Zhang led the way with a 3-under-par 68.
The fields were cut to the low 16 scores, with the first round and quarterfinals in match play set for today.
