A handful of Northeast Ohio high school sports teams played for state championships on Saturday, the last day of prep sports competition in Ohio for the 2011-12 academic year.


Four high school softball teams won state titles at Akron’s Firestone Stadium.

Convoy Crestview won its second state softball championship in the day’s first game by defeating Vienna Mathews 6-2 in the Division IV title tilt.

Behind a one-hitter by pitcher Lindsay Swipas, Warren Champion shut out Bloom-Carroll 2-0 for the Division III crown.

The LaGrange Keystone softball team scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Greenville 7-2 to cap its 32-0 perfect season with a Division II state championship.

The North Canton Hoover softball team ended a full day of play at Firestone Stadium by defeating Lebanon 2-0 in the Division I state championship game to win the program’s sixth overall state title.


Four high school baseball teams won state titles at Huntington Park in Columbus.

Columbus St. Francis DeSales collected the first hardware of the day, defeating Wapakoneta 3-2 in the Division II state title game.

In the day’s second game, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller defeated Westlake 9-6 in the Division I title game to earn the program’s sixth overall state championship.

Wheelersburg defeated Lima Central Catholic 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel in the Division III title game to win the program’s second overall state championship.

The Cuyahoga Heights baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the top of the seventh inning in the Division IV state championship game to knot the score, but Minster scored a run in the bottom half of the inning for the walk-off win and the program’s second consecutive state title.

Girls Lacrosse

Hathaway Brown defeated New Albany 17-13 to win the Division II Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state championship at Mason High School while Medina defeated Upper Arlington 10-9 at the same venue in the Division I Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state championship game for the program’s third consecutive state title.

Boys Lacrosse

Columbus St. Francis DeSales withstood a late-game rally by Rocky River to defeat the Pirates 8-6 and win the Division II Ohio High School Lacrosse Association state championship.

Track and Field

Congrats to the numerous Northeast Ohio student-athletes who earned medals this weekend at the track and field state tournament in Columbus.
