PUNTA GORDA — Clyde Newton ran for 208 yards and five touchdowns in the first half as Charlotte cruised past Gulf Coast, 49-0, in the District 7A-11 opener for both teams Friday night.
After Newton scored on the third play of the game, the teams waited out a 90 minute lightning delay. But things did not get any better for the Sharks (1-4, 0-1) as they were thoroughly dominated on both sides of the ball by the Tarpons (4-2, 1-0).
“They’re a good football team and we’re not there yet,” said Gulf Coast coach Pete Fominaya. “Hopefully, one day we will be. We’re going to keep working and try to get better. We’re building upon things and we’re improving every week. We’re just not seeing the results as fast as we want to. This isn’t going to be an overnight thing. This is going to be a slow, tedious process. But we’re going to keep investing in these kids and we’ll be just fine.”
