Mount Mansfield

* Coach: Rose Bedard (sixth season)

* Key returnees: Maria Morse, junior; Ariana Mathews-Salzman, senior; Alaina Hedrickson, junior; Devon Treston, senior; Izzy Toulis, senior, Addy Stricker, senior

* Outlook: The team comes into the season with 39 girls on the roster, spilt between the varsity and junior varsity teams. Last year’s champions in the hip hop genre, the Cougars are looking to build upon that success this year. “I’m really really confident about our season. We have a lot of good veterans and new talent,” Bedard said.

* Opener: Jan. 12 at home

South Burlington

* Coach: Doris O’Brien (10th season)

* Key returnees: Kiersten Anderson, senior; Michaela Britt, senior; Melissa Gingras, senior; Victoria Perron, senior; Maggie Rodgers, senior; Kaleigh Sauders, senior

* Outlook: The Rebels are coming off an overall championship, as well as titles in jazz and pom. Only losing two dancers to graduation and 30 on the sign-up list, hopes are high. “We know it’s going to be hard because we’re defending champions, but we need to put last year behind us and focus on this year,” O’Brien said.

Cheerleading capsules

Essex

* Coach: Maria Ung (sixth season)

* Key returnees: Too many to name.

* Outlook: The Hornets claimed back-to-back Divison I crowns and their 20th overall in program history last year. Expectations of another title might depend on the team’s communication and cohesiveness after four seniors graduated.

Winooski

* Coach: Ashley Correia

* Key returnees: Ashley Henry, senior; Victoria White, sophomore

* Outlook: After finishing third a year ago in Division II, the Spartans have more than doubled the size of their roster to 11 members. The coaching staff wants to continue to teach “proper and safe techniques” while adding new material for the squad to learn. “This team is very new and equally excited to have an awesome season,” Correia said.
