CIML girls' basketball: Ankeny hands Dowling Catholic first loss

By

The Ankeny girls’ basketball team continues to gain confidence.
Fresh off a 19-point win at No. 5 Southeast Polk on Friday, the Hawkettes pulled away in the second half for a 44-32 victory at Dowling Catholic on Tuesday, handing the Maroons their first loss of the season.
Brittany Hedrick led Ankeny with 18 points, including five 3-pointers.
“It’s a big win … another one. That’s two in a row,” Hedrick said. “We beat two great teams, and it’s a confidence-booster.”
Madi Robson added 12 points as the Hawkettes improved to 4-3 on the season, moving above the .500 mark for the first time.
“To beat Dowling here when they had won some big games and were undefeated at this time of the year, it’s big for our kids,” said Ankeny coach Scott DeJong. “We knew it would be a challenge, but I thought our kids really stepped up to the challenge.”
Dowling (5-1) had won its first five games by an average of 26 points. Sophomore Audrey Faber poured in a game-high 20 points for the Maroons, but her teammates combined for just four baskets.
Dowling rallied from an 18-10 deficit and took its only lead of the game, 21-20, on a 3-point play by Faber with 3 minutes, 34 seconds left in the third quarter. She was held to just two more baskets the rest of the way.
“We put Jaali (Winters) on her and had more help and increased our pressure, and we really stopped her until she hit that 3-pointer at the end,” DeJong said. “Maybe that was the difference maker.”
Ankeny closed the third quarter with a 9-3 run, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Hedrick to take a 29-24 lead into the final period. She later made her fifth 3-pointer to spur the Hawkettes to a 35-26 lead with 4:09 remaining.
Robson then followed with two more baskets to seal the victory.
“We had confidence in ourselves and we knew we could crank up our defense a lot,” Hedrick said.
“We just needed our offense to come along, and it did.”
Ankeny held an 18-14 lead at halftime. The Hawkettes made four 3-pointers in the first half, while Faber had eight points to keep Dowling close.
