MONTGOMERY

There may not be a more quotable high school player in Mississippi this year than South Panola’s Deon Mix.

The affable 6-foot-4, 315-pound offensive lineman is capable of a great quote on everything from football to sleep habits to genocide in Congo.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Mix made it a point this week to tell one Clarion-Ledger reporter that he wished he was asked about more than just football, and promised one of his teachers that he would talk about what was going on in Congo.

“Y’all always ask us about football stuff but something that doesn’t get a lot of attention is the genocide over there in the Congo,” he said. “I told my teacher that I was going to mention that. Thousands of people have died over there and they need to do something about it.”

That’s not all Mix talked about this week.

On rooming with David Mahaffey: “David sleeps all the time,” said Mix with a laugh. “I have never seen anyone sleep that much. I don’t have anyone to talk to so I leave.”

On his All-Star teammates: “I just want all of us to go get an education. That’s all it’s about, getting an education. Football can only take you so far.”

On Charleston athlete Kameron Myers: “Somebody needs to get on him. I hope it is Mississippi State.”

Mix wasn’t the only one with some good quotes this week. Here are a few of our other favorites:

South Panola safety Antonio Conner on staying in-state versus leaving: “If you come to Alabama and go to the BCS championship you wouldn’t be doing it for your state, you’d be doing it for Alabama. It’s a real hard decision to make.”

Houston defensive end Chris Jones when coaches sent Mix over to block him: “Coach, y’all better bring more guys over here than that.”

West Bolivar running back Kailo Moore on being injured: “Right now I’m at about 65 percent. But I feel like my 65 percent is better than a couple other people’s 100 percent.”

Ashton Shumpert on trucking Reuben Foster: “I just remember seeing him coming and I set him up to try to set him up for my spin move. I don’t really remember what happened after that.”

Brandon linebacker Tayler Polk on what he learned this week: “Mississippi fights and we’re going to be physical and we’re not going to back down.”

Hattiesburg defensive back Tony Bridges on the most enjoyable teammates this week: “Man, I’d have to say Deon Mix and Tony Conner and Chris Jones. Those guys are wild and just a lot of fun to be around. They love to laugh and they don’t get in any trouble. I’d love to play with those guys every day.”
