On the mark

Age: 18.

Year: Senior.

Family: Parents, Tere and Erich; brothers Ethan, 8, Cole, 7, and Brandy, 3, and sister, Tess, 5.

Accomplishments: Won the outstanding boys’ track athlete award at the Eastern Valley Conference meet after winning the 100, 200 and 400. … Had the area’s top time in the 100 (:10.86 seconds), 200 (:21.82) and the 400 (:49.38). … Finished second at the WIAA state track and field meet in Division 2 in the 100 (10.95 seconds) and third in the 200 (:22.19) and 400 (:49.57).

Making strides

Has it sunk in how well you did at the state meet?

“It’s pretty nice to get in the top three for all three of my events. I wish I could have gotten a first in a couple of them, but, oh well.”

Does it irk you about getting so close to winning the 200?

“If I wouldn’t have run the 400, I feel pretty confident that I would have won the 200. Those last 50 meters, I just ran out of fuel. It was two days of running and I had nothing left.”

When did you realize track was something you wanted to do?

“It’s in the genes. My mom’s side. She was in track and my grandpa was in track. I just followed along and got into track too.”

What do you enjoy most about the sport?

“I like the starts and the sound of the gun, just watiting there and the adenaline kicking in and looking down on the ground. It’s just you and the lane. It’s pretty nice.”

What did it feel like going against other top athletes in the 100?

“I was pumped. (State champion) Brad Neumann was injured last year and was still recovering, so I knew he had the potential to do some damage. I had to keep my eye out on him. I was happy for him though, because he came back from a pretty good injury.”

Which event is your favorite?

“That’s a tough one. Probably the 100. It’s the fastest and I think the most undpredictable. It’s just going out and having some fun and just running. The 400, I absolutely hate. My mindset is I don’t want to run this, but once the gun goes off, I’m just fine. The 200, I’m thinking OK, I just have to turn around the corner and hold everybody off.”

Off the track

Do you have any other hobbies?

“I love to bike and I like to run for fun, too. And I like soccer. My brother loves soccer.”

What are your plans?

“I’m serving a two-year mission in Anaheim (Calif.) and then going to college afterwards.”
