Coach's Death Hits Community Hard

Denton, NC — Mike Crowell, head football and wrestling coach at South Davidson High School died Sunday.

School faculty, staff and coaches met with players at 6 p.m. Sunday at the school.

Crowell graduated from Denton High School in 1978 and was in his fifth year as the school’s head football coach. He won a 1-A dual team state championship as the wrestling coach.

Before going on to coach at South Davidson, Crowell played baseball at Pfeiffer.

He had been at South Davidson for almost 30 years.

Statement from Davidson County Schools:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mike Crowell, football and wrestling coach of South Davidson High School. Mr. Crowell graduated from Denton High School and later served 25 years as wrestling coach and 5 years as Head football coach at South Davidson High School.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.
Our focus is on supporting the family and the students and staff of South Davidson High School. Guidance counselors, social workers and support staff are on campus this morning to provide counseling and support for the staff and students.

No changes have been made to the Homecoming schedule. Currently the school staff is discussing ways to honor Coach Crowell at the game on Friday night.

No arrangements are available at this time.”
