SCOTT — Behind the dominance of senior Hali Williams and junior Kiley Belsom, the Comeaux Lady Spartans opened up Division I, District 1 play in victorious fashion, sweeping the Acadiana High Lady Rams 25-17, 25-21 and 25-15 Tuesday.
The Lady Spartans, who improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in district, took advantage of Williams and Belsom’s ability to put the ball down on a consistent basis.
“Hali is definitely a force to be reckoned with,” Lady Spartans coach Erin Belsom said. “She does a great job of seeing the court and hitting the ball where the opposing team is not covering. She is very smart.
“Kiley is what I call my dynamite that comes in a small package,” Belsom continued. “She is super aggressive but also has the ability to hit the ball with some touch. Hali and Kiley are very smart players and they are going to make hard for anyone (to contain them).”
Williams, who was a Preseason All-Acadiana first team selection, finished the match with a team-high seven kills and seven digs in the victory for the Lady Spartans.
“I felt like we did a really good job,” Williams said. “We struggled with our communication at times, but we did a good job of coming together and working it out. We did a good job of changing up our offense by using some quick sets instead of the basic middle and outside hits.”
Belsom, who recorded five kills, six digs, three aces and two assists, was equally impressed by the Lady Spartans’ performance in the district opener.
“We played great, but I still believe we could’ve played a lot better,” Belsom said. “We did a good job of finally getting our feet to the ball and as the match went along our first-touch began to get better and better.”
Joining Williams and Belsom among the top performers for the Lady Spartans were Abbie Guidry (4 kills, 3 blocks, 1 dig), Kayla Trahan (4 kills, 1 block, 1 dig, 1 assist), Amber Langlinais (4 digs, 7 assists, 1 ace), Ashley Morvant (3 digs, 2 aces, 6 assists), Kirby Thibeaux (3 digs, 6 assists) and Madison Comeaux (3 kills, 5 aces).
In the losing effort for the Lady Rams, who fell to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in district, T.J. Antoine recorded five kills, seven assists, three aces and four digs, while Lauren Louvierre contributed with five kills, eight assists, one ace and four digs.
“This is a huge victory for us, because we are coming off of a tough week last week,” Belsom said. “So any district win we can get is a big district win.”
