Appoquinimink and Newark entered Friday night’s Blue Hen Flight A football game with identical 1-2 records.

The visiting Jaguars left no doubt as to which the better team was by the end of the night, pouding the Yellowjackets 41-7.

Despite running just 11 plays in the first half, Appo went into halftime with a 14-0 lead, thanks to running back Andre Connally. Connally ran the ball six times for 117 yards in the opening half, and scored on runs of 22 yards and 52 yards.

The quick back’s 52-yard dash in the second quarter came on a play in which a defender had his jersey wrapped up. A quick spin by Connally shook the defense, and it was off to the races to put the Jaguars up two touchdowns.

“Connally is an excellent football player,” said Appo coach Jeff Weiner.

The lead could have been greater, but 10 first-half penalties thwarted any additional momentum for the Jaguars.

“We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot going forward,” said Weiner. “We hurt ourselves, and we have to get better.”

On defense, the Jags bottled up Newark’s biggest weapon, quarterback Keith Stubbs, who couldn’t get loose for a big gain.

“We know that he’s a good football player and a great athlete,” said Weiner. “We preached all week not to give up big plays and he’s their big play guy.”
