Coronado boys soccer aiming at state title; Boys Soccer: Team previews, Vol. 3

By

Coronado boys soccer has nine returning starters. Nine players who remember what it felt like to lose in last season’s Division III title match where it gave away an early penalty.

Coronado hopes to erase those memories this season and entered as the top-ranked team in D-III.

Catalina Foothills, which has seven returning starters, also has hopes to do damage in its division. It started off the season well enough, winning the Brandon Bean Kickoff Classic.

Northwest Chrisitan, a power in D-III, graduated eight players, six of who were starters, but you can never count out Jeff Penzone.

Just as you can never count out Desert Vista (seven returning starters) and Mike Rabasca. While Corona del Sol and its eight returning starters look for a rebound season.

Read season previews of each of those teams as well as several others below.

To get your ready for the season and through the early stages of the season, every other day Inside The Lines will be posting preseason information on more than 75 boys soccer teams. The information below was provided by coaches who sent them in to ITL. (Teams posted each day are chosen at random.)

Coach’s comment: We are looking to build on our strength in net and in our defense. Having 7 returning starters, we know that our incredibly difficult schedule is even harder this year with the improvement in CDO, Ironwood Ridge and Cienega. Salpointe will be a strong as ever so each and every game takes on huge proportions-especially with the change to ties. This ruling could cripple Section 2 teams in power points.
We are optimistically cautious that we will make a deep run and challenge for another state title.

Coach’s comment: Goals:
1. Be competitive in our first varsity season without a Senior class.

3. Establish Traditions within the soccer program.

Key newcomers: Ruben Paredes forward 9th will be a very exciting player to watch, plays the game more like a senior.

Coach’s comment: This team will have the ability to put the ball into the net but the big question for this team is how we will defend. The fullbacks have a ways to go before we can establish ourselves as a good defending team. Overall a very good group of kids that are very coachable and want to get better.

Andre Zonoozi – MidField – Senior – smart and strong midfielder who makes great decisions in flow of play // played behind two senior midfielders last year but learned immensely and will be a threat to opponents
Chandler Maszton – Defender – Senior – strong defender and orchestrater of our back line // leadership and communication is strong suit for this player
Pete Martin – Defender – Junior – one of best man marking players I have coached // shuts down key offensive opposing players and comes forward to contribute to offensive push
Elliot Martin – Forward/Midfield – tenacious work rate and knowledge of the game // provides unexpected play that keeps opposing teams off balance.

Key newcomers: Scott Martin – Midfield // Defender – Freshman – aggressive and passionate play that will cause havoc against to opposing sides // great speed and knowledge of game // expected to make an immediate impact to our side
Justin Johnson – Defender – Junior – player that came off the bench over last 2 years and though I wouldn’t consider him a newcomer, he will make an impact to our starting 11 // fast, physical and focused // will help shore up a string defensive set
Cody Fullerton – GK//MidField – Junior – starting GK all of last year but has the technique and mind to play on the field and can be dangerous // excellent ball skill and can distribute very well // athletic between the posts and a true GK if he plays at that spot.

Coach’s comment: We graduated 8 Seniors (and 6 were starters) so will be rebuilding in many ways. The returning players from last year are very capable and are expected to carry on the winning tradition that has been built with our program over the last 10 years. Solid up top and on the back line and with adjustments and tough play, midfield will be the key as to how we go. I expect my side to contend for Section and Division once again if they remain focused, disciplined and play smart, physical soccer.

We are making some adjustments, having played a 3-5-2 most of last year and are switching to a 4-5-1.
