There was no shortage of competition for Campbellsport’s Ryan Costello in the 132-pound bracket of Saturday’s Badger State Invite at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Not only did Costello match the highly ranked opponents he faced, he usually dominated them.
The senior won the 132-pound weight class with three pins in four matches including two in the first minute of his match. In the final, he pinned Scott Arneson of Merrill (ranked No. 8 in Division 1) in 41 seconds.
Costello’s only close match was an 8-6 win against Lomira’s Alec Sauer in the semifinal.
Also for Campbellsport, Nick Stahl finished fourth at 120. He won his first two matches before losing in the semifinal by tech fall and a 6-0 decision in the third-place match.
Alex Costello took fifth at 106, winning a 5-2 decision in the fifth-place match, and Zach Gassner was fifth at 170 with three straight decision victories.
Taylor Flasch won three matches by pin at 220, but also lost two decisions to take sixth place.
Campbellsport took 11th as a team, two spots ahead of former Flyway rival Lomira. The Lions didn’t have a wrestler reach the finals, but they had five finish in the top six places.
Casey Seltrecht took third place at 138 pounds. He suffered his first loss of the season in the semifinal to Tucker Sarbacker of Iowa-Grant (No. 6 in D3), but he rebounded to earn a 5-1 decision in the third-place match.
Sauer followed his 8-6 decision loss to Costello with a 6-2 loss to Brock Polhamus of Sparta to take fourth. Garrett Keller lost a pair of major decisions to highly ranked opponents to take fourth place.
Tyler Scharschmidt lost his first match of the day, but rebounded to win a 6-2 decision, a third-period pin and a first-period pin to take fifth place at 145. Erik Danner went 3-2 on the day to take sixth at 126 pounds.
