Cox to suit up, be on the field for his final game with Blue Ridge

By

Lakeside Blue Ridge senior linebacker/running back Chans Cox will suit up and step foot on the field at Northern Arizona’s Walkup Skydome on Friday night for the Division IV football championship game against Chandler Seton Catholic.

But don’t expect Cox to be a factor. He could be used much the same way Phoenix Brophy Prep senior wide receiver Devon Allen was used in Friday’s Division I semifinal against Phoenix Mountain Pointe. As a decoy. Allen didn’t catch a pass in that game, but he played the entire game at wide receiver, despite a sprained ankle.

Cox, picked to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January, has been out for the playoffs with a hair-line foot facture. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder, who is headed to Arizona State in January, has been battling injuries since August. First, it was a high ankle sprain that slowed him considerably until late in the season. Now the foot fracture.

Coach Paul Moro won’t deny Cox a chance to play in his final high school game. But how much?

"He will play some," Moro said.

Cox could just be in on a play or two, just so he can say he was part of the state championship game his senior year.
