CROSS COUNTRY: Five runners to watch

Jenna Parsons, Delta

The Eagles sophomore has big plans for her second year after a promising freshman season. Parsons, also a track runner, won the 1,600 in the spring at the Southside Sectional. Parsons finished fifth at the Delta Sectional in cross country last fall, running a time of 20:43.57.

Genna Douthitt, Delta

Delta coach Steve Wray said Douthitt has had a strong summer in preparation for this season, as the Eagles return their entire lineup from last season’s semistate team. Douthitt ran a 21:50.34 at last year’s Delta Regional, helping her team qualify for semistate.

Abigail Johnson, Jay County

Johnson returns for her junior season at Jay County and is expected to be one of the Patriots’ top runners. Johnson finished 11th at the Delta Sectional last year, running a 21:43.67. She ran a 21:50.34 at the Delta Regional.

Alexi Bocanegra, Union City

Bocanegra, a sophomore, is one of the younger members of the list. But a strong freshman season makes her sophomore year worth following. She ran a 20:30.17 last year at semistate. She finished seventh at the Delta Sectional last year with a 20:50.03.

Miriam Horowitz, Burris

Horowitz ran last season for Central, but she enrolled this year at the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities and will run for Burris. She finished 15th at the Delta Sectional last year with a 21:54.03. She then improved her time dramatically at regional, running a 21:01.95 to finish 18th.
