Cross country roundup: Bida, Millbrook prevail in MHAL races

MaryKate Bida finished first and the Millbrook High School girls cross country team defeated Wallkill 25-32 and Spackenkill 15-50 at a Mid-Hudson Athletic League tri-meet held at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton on Wednesday.

Bida clocked in at 20 minutes, 26 seconds. Teammate Kyla Karten finished third, while Sandhya Selmon was sixth and Evie Grainger finished seventh.

Madeline Schmauch led the way in ninth place for Spackenkill, which lost to Wallkill, 15-50.

Haughton takes MHAL race — Marlboro’s Georgia Houghton won the 3.1-mile MHAL race at HITS in 20:52. The Iron Dukes defeated Saugerties 21-35 and fell to Onteora 23-34.

Webutuck’s Denise Iberto placed third in 21:34. The Warriors fielded an incomplete team.

Burda wins title, breaks record — Arlington’s Bella Burda won the individual title at the Section 1 Conference 1 League A championship meet in 18:23.40 at Bowdoin Park’s 3.1-mile course late Tuesday.

Her winning time broke the Dutchess County record, as well as Arlington’s record of 18:57.9, which was established by Kaylan Kemink in 2002. Burda’s finish is the fourth-best time in Bowdoin Park history.

Arlington’s Delphi Cleaveland placed second in 19:16.80. Cleaveland’s time is the fifth-best time in Bowdoin Park history.

Lakeland/Panas’ Megan Hopkins was third in 20:35.50. Claire Gomba placed fourth in 20:58.60 for John Jay, which finished second in the team scoring. Grace McGrath finished fifth in 21:12.40 for Lourdes, which placed third in team scoring.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers were Arlington’s Marina Eberhart (sixth place, 21:19.20), Lourdes’ Veronica Malloy (seventh, 21:27.30), John Jay’s Abby Paglia (eighth, 21:41), Ketcham’s Rachel Cacace (ninth, 21:55.90), and Arlington’s Kayla Sullivan (10th, 22:15.50).

Ketcham finished fifth in the team scoring.

Boys cross country

Marlboro’s Kyle Morgan won the 3.1-mile MHAL race at HITS in 17:21 as Marlboro went 1-2 .

The Iron Dukes defeated Webutuck 25-35, fell to Saugerties 28-31 and lost to Onteora 27-31.

Webutuck also lost to Saugerties 18-41 and to Onteora 18-37. The Warriors’ top finisher was Jesse Capellaro in eighth place at 18:33.

Spackenkill, Heraghty win race — Led by Sam Heraghty’s first-place finish in 19:00, and teammate Ryan Jelinek crossing the finish line one second later, Spackenkill defeated Millbrook 18-55, and Wallkill 22-33 at an MHAL tri-meet held at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton.

Millbrook, which lost to Wallkill, 19-79, was led by Ed Stickter, who placed fourth (19:27).

Hanson claims crown for Arlington — Arlington’s Sibby Hanson won the individual title at the Section 1 Conference 1 League A championship meet in 16:26.30 at Bowdoin Park’s 3.1-mile course late Tuesday.

Arlington won the team title and had four other runners place in the top 10 finishers: Aaron Ryley (third place, 17:14.70), Chris Koenitzer (seventh place, 17:28.70), Corey Chiavelli (eighth place, 17:29.70) and Steve Morrison (ninth place, 17:34.20).

Lakeland/ Panas placed second. Tom Primrose was the top finisher for Roy C. Ketcham in sixth place in 17:22.30 as the Indians placed third. Our Lady of Lourdes placed fourth behind top finisher Luke Timm (11th place, 17:45.50). John Jay placed fifth. The Patriots’ top finisher was Troy Dean (15th, 17:53.70).
