Cross country: WLA boys second, Springs girls sixth at Hilltopper Invitational; Waupun boys win at Ripon

The Winnebago Lutheran boys cross country team took second place at the Hilltopper Invitational on Saturday in Mount Calvary.

Freedom won the boys and girls meets.

The Irish occupied places two through six in the boys meet, but the winner was WLA’s Mitchell Bilitz. The junior cruised in at 17 minutes, 4 seconds to win by 27 seconds. Eric Bilitz was seventh in 18:13, and Brady Kollmann wasn’t far behind, taking ninth in 18:37.

St. Lawrence was third as a team. Erin Urness ran the course in 18:46 for 15th. The Hilltoppers’ next four qualifiers finished within 34 seconds of each other, beginning with Joseph Nguyen’s time of 18:59.

Springs took 13th as a team. Andrew Skiff finished in 18:52 for 19th individually and Alan Burkart was 30th in 19:13.

Oakfield’s Ryan Easterson ran in 18:50 for 19th place on North Fondy/Oakfield’s incomplete team. Luke Jonker took 67th for CWC’s incomplete team.

Springs led area girls teams in sixth place led against by sophomore Liz Bohn and senior Abby Busse. Bohn took fourth individually in 15:35 and Busse was fifth in 15:45.

WLA was 11th paced by Abaigeal Theander (14th, 17:03) and Mariah Giffey (38th, 17:50).

CWC took 16th with Hannah Roddy’s time of 19:16 as the Crusaders’ top finish.

Jenny Schwersinski took 76th for North Fondy’s top time.

Kris Greening Invite

Waupun won the boys meet with three top-10 runners and the meet champion. Andrew Klapper finished the course at Tuscumbia in 16:32 to beat Green Lake’s Matt Van Scyoc by 12 seconds. The Warriors’ also had a third-place run from Bryce Verheyen in 17:24 and a ninth-place finish by Josh Knowlton in 18:16.

Chance Feller paced fifth-place Mayville with his time of 17:39 that was good for sixth.

Sixth-place Lomira’s runners were bunched together with Austin Holman (22nd) and Tyler Morgan (23rd) finishing in 19 minutes.

Tyler Beres led Campbellsport in 19th place finishing in 18:54.

Ripon won the girls meet, while Lomira was second and Mayville took third.

Lomira’s Brianna Falk ran in 17:55 for third place finishing a minute behind winner Katelin Cunningham, and 25 seconds behind Mayville’s Brittaney Danner.

Lomira’s Ellyn Halley took 11th in 18:46, just in front of Erica Wenninger and Alyssa Hakverson of Mayville.

Waupun’s Hannah Smith ran in 18:01 to finish in fourth, and Lizzy Fellion was Campbellsport’s top runner taking 18th in 19:07

Rio/Fall River Invite

The Markesan boys placed fifth, and the girls were seventh at the seven-team Friday event.

The Hornets scored 126 points on the boys side for fifth. Marshall won with 39 points.

Tate HIllman ran for seventh place for Markesan in 18:56.04. Brayden Bernhagen was the next fastest Hornet, taking 26th in 20:13.24. Chad Bruss was 28th (20:18.34).

For the Markesan girls, Veronica Sauerbrei was the best finisher at 28th (20:09.55). Hailey Drager was 32nd for Markesan (20:20.08), and Michelle Deaver was 36th.
