With the New Orleans Hornets planning to become the Pelicans, USA Today looked at 50 of the wackiest nicknames. Five that caught our eye:

Banana Slugs

UC Santa Cruz gained notoriety when John Travolta famously wore a Banana Slugs shirt in the movie “Pulp Fiction.”

Cornjerkers

Hoopeston Area (Ill.) High’s moniker refers to the laborers who jerked corn from a stalk before machines made process obsolete.

Martians

Michigan’s Goodrich High switched from Gladiators as a nod to Mars, the Roman agricultural god of war.

Dreadnaughts

Michigan’s Dexter High pays homage to the HMS Dreadnought, a revolutionary battleship introduced by the British Royal Navy in 1906.

Nimrods

Michigan’s Watersmeet High took the name from Genesis 10:8, where it is said that Nimrod was a mighty warrior or hunter on the earth.
