In a matchup of 2011 Class 6A playoff teams, defense was the name of the game — and Melbourne played it better as it shut out Sebastian River 3-0 in the preseason Kickoff Classic Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
After forcing a Sharks punt in the game’s opening series, the Bulldogs ground out a 10-play drive that culminated in Pat Brush’s 22-yard field goal with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter. Running back Jeron Bell paced the methodical attack with 21 yards rushing on five carries.
Melbourne head coach Todd Wilson utilized both quarterbacks in the contest. Playing the first half and fourth quarter, senior Sterling Munich rushed for 30 yards. Parker Kempfer completed one pass for seven yards and ran for 5 yards in the third quarter.
“They are a really a good football team, they beat us up front and they outplayed us, but in the end, you find a way to win,” Wilson said. “I was proud of us defensively, but we’ve got to do better offensively. Both quarterbacks did some good things and made some mistakes; we’ll look at film and figure it out.”
In addition to the game-winning field goal, Brush boomed a trio of punts 46, 47 and 60 yards to keep the Sharks’ offense pinned deep in their own territory throughout the second half.
Both teams begin their regular seasons Friday when the Bulldogs host long-time rival Satellite at 7:30 pm and Sebastian River visits the Citrus Bowl to face Vero Beach at 7 pm.
