Seniors Mat Denison and Stan Lassen earned a runner-up finish at No. 1 doubles on Saturday in the Holly/Fenton area to help the Lakeview High boys’ tennis team earn a top-eight finish at the MHSAA Division 2 state finals.

Lakeview — making its seventh straight appearance at the state championships and an eighth-place team finisher in 2011 — finished in a tie for eighth place this time around with Bloomfield Hills Andover. Both schools had nine-point totals.

Placing first as a team with 35 points was Midland Dow, second was Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central with 23, and third was Portage Central with 22.

The Denison-Lassen duo had reached Saturday’s semifinal round via a bye and a pair of victories on Friday. Then, on Saturday, the tandem — seeded No. 6 — defeated second-seeded Daichi Hirakawa-Abhiram Krishnan of Portage Central 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the semis before falling 6-2, 6-4 to top-seeded Jason Chang-Vikram Shanker of Midland Dow in the title match.

Also on Saturday, sophomore Cameron Babas, a No. 5 seed at No. 3 singles who had a bye and a couple of victories on Friday, fell in the semifinal round to top-seeded Juli Guerra of Midland Dow 6-1, 6-3. Guerra went on top defeat Portage Central’s Trevor VanderKlok, the No. 2 seed, 6-2, 6-2 in the championship tilt.

All of the players in Lakeview’s other flights were eliminated during Friday’s play.

Also eliminated Friday were members of Bronson’s team and individual qualifier Evan Thomas of Pennfield in early rounds at the MHSAA Division 4 finals in the Kalamazoo area.
