District races take shape
Astronaut and Merritt Island pitched shutouts on Friday to put themselves at the top of the Class 5A, District 13 race. Bayside, meanwhile, won at Melbourne, 21-7, to move to 2-0 in Class 6A, District 13, a half game up on Palm Bay, which was off this week.
The Heritage Panthers improved their school record for victories in a season with a 27-7 win at Eau Gallie. With the Bulldogs dropping to 0-2, the Panthers look like the third contender for the playoffs in 6A-13.
In Class 4A, District 5, Cocoa went to Cocoa Beach and fell behind early but then stormed to a 40-6 win. The Tigers play against Bergen Catholic (N.J.) next Saturday before a showdown with Orlando Jones in a game that could determine the district title.
Viera also opened Class 7A, District 12 play Friday night and hung tough with No. 7 Ft. Pierce Central early, but the Cobras pulled away to win 34-0.
