Division I girls soccer final: CVU earns repeat in overtime win over Essex

By

Champlain Valley defended its crown when Emma Davitt deposited a penalty kick with 1:49 left in the first overtime period to give the Redhawks a 2-1 win over Essex in the Division I high school girls soccer championship game at Buck Hard Field on Saturday.

Finding space and speeding into the 18-yard box, Haliana Burhans was taken by an Essex defender, setting up a PK try for Davitt, who drilled a shot into the left corner to deliver CVU its 13th D-I crown in program history.
Before many of the fans even had a chance to get settled, Essex struck for a goal, Marisa Vanacore burying Charlotte Stuart’s setup 25 seconds into regulation.
Settling down after Essex’s quick goal, CVU controlled possession and pulled even in the 29th minute. Mackenzie’s Kingston’s equalizer stemmed from Kaelyn Kohlasch’s corner kick.
The Redhawks continued to pressure early in the second half, just missing a chance to take the lead when Audrey Morehouse rang a 20-yard shot off the crossbar.
Essex had a grade-A chance in the opening minute of overtime when Alexa Pius pounced on the rebound of Allie Astor’s direct kick, but the shot just missed wide right.
Lily Harris finished with two saves for CVU while Essex’s Essie Fiore stopped five shots.
CVU finished with advantages in shots (12-7) and corners (6-5).
