Last year, Eastside High teammates Weston Jackson and Austin Mason teamed with J.L. Mann’s Dan Joyner to help Greenville County to its second Big League World Series title.

They want the chance to do it again.

“It was a really good experience,” Jackson said. “Once you got to Easley, you were playing with the best of the best. And it was cool to hang out with people from different countries.”

Jackson, Mason and Joyner each will get the chance for a repeat – all three were among 17 players selected last week to the District 7 (Greenville County) Big League All-Star team.

The team will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in mid-July for the Big League Southeast Regional, which it has won four of the past five years. The regional winner earns a berth in the Big League World Series, which will be held in Easley for the 12th straight year July 25-Aug. 1.

Jackson, an infielder who has committed to play at Presbyterian College, was a key component of last year’s world championship team, batting .400 in the tournament and helping Greenville to its second world title and first since 2008.

“I think we can be even better than we were last year,” Jackson said.

Jackson and Mason, who is bound for The Citadel, will be joined on this year’s Big League team by Eastside teammate Luke Pennell, a USC Sumter signee.

Joyner, a pitcher who has committed to Furman, will have a trio of Mann teammates on the squad — Taylor Vetzel, Matt Riggs and Wesley Rogers, all of whom will play at Spartanburg Methodist next season.

“They’re excited to play together and excited to represent Greenville County and District 7,” coach Jeff Young said. “They all grew up playing Little League in Greenville and they want to do well for them.”

District 7 has fared well in Big League play since the district was created in 2007, winning four regional titles and compiling a 15-6 record in BLBWS play.

The team is in the process of fundraising to help with travel expenses to and from the Southeast Region Tournament. To find out how to help the team, contact Young at jeff@westendbaseballacademy.com.
