Hillcrest (Class AAAA), Bishop England (AA), St. Joseph’s (A) and Porter-Gaud (SCISA AAA) are the defending champions from South Carolina in the field. Christian Academy of Knoxville won a state championship in Tennessee.
Other past South Carolina state champions in the tournament are Pickens (13 state titles), Dorman (11), Ashley Hall (nine), Aiken (one) and Daniel (one). The other in-state teams are Rock Hill, Spring Valley and Wando.
Rounding out the field are Hardin Valley (Tenn.) Academy, Musselman (W.Va.) and Woodward (Ga.) Academy.
First-round action will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Dorman’s arena, auxiliary gym and freshman campus gym, as well as at Gable Middle School.
Championship matches in the four divisions (gold, silver, bronze and copper) are scheduled for Saturday between 6 and 7 p.m.
* Hillcrest, Daniel and St. Joseph’s retained the top spots in Class AAAA, AAA and A, respectively, in the latest South Carolina Volleyball Coaches Association rankings released Tuesday.
Hillcrest entered Tuesday night’s match at Easley at 20-1 after finishing as runner-up in the Tennessee Tandem tournament in Chattanooga this past weekend. The Rams won nine straight matches before losing to St. Agnes Academy of Memphis in the final.
Daniel is 12-3 after Monday’s win over Emerald.
Two of the Lions’ three losses have come against Dorman, which is No. 4 in AAAA.
St. Joseph’s is 13-2, having lost only to AAAA schools Hillcrest and Wando.

Three former Greenville County players have seen action as freshman for SMC this season: Jenna Farotto (Eastside), Alexis Sellers (Blue Ridge) and Jordyn Robertson (Shannon Forest). Robertson is second on the team in assists.
* Kylie Haun, who led Hillcrest to the 2011 state title and was the South Carolina Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, has played all nine matches and started one for Metro (Colo.) State, an NCAA Division II school in Denver. Haun is fifth on the team in kills with 32.
