Ensworth-BA ESPNU game historic for Midstate

By

Brentwood Academy will play at Ensworth on Oct. 19 in the first nationally televised game involving two Midstate high school football teams.

The game will be shown on ESPNU as part of the network’s 10th annual GEICO ESPN High School Football Showcase.

Ensworth is the two-time defending Division II-AA champion. Brentwood Academy is a 10-time state champion. Both have major college recruits.

“With the publicity some of the Brentwood Academy kids have gotten, the publicity some of our kids have gotten, the fact we’ve won (state titles) the last two years — I think it’s a big pickup for them,” Ensworth assistant head coach Paul Wade said of the telecast.

One-third of The Tennessean Dandy Dozen football recruits will be represented.

Brentwood Academy’s Jalen Ramsey has committed to Southern Cal, quarterback Max Staver has committed to Florida and running back D’Montre Wade is being recruited by SEC schools. Ensworth running back Corn Elder has offers from SEC schools and also from Ohio State and Nebraska, among others.

“It’s going to be fun for the kids,” said Cody White, a first-year coach who came to Brenwood Academy from Texas. I’ve been involved in two or three of them. It’s a great opportunity to play the reigning champs.”

The game will mark Ensworth’s second ESPNU appearance of the season, following the upcoming telecast of its Saturday game at Lexington (Ky.) Catholic. The Tigers’ 35-28 win Friday against Memphis University School was shown on CSS-TV.

The Showcase will feature 11 games that will air on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The Brentwood Academy-Ensworth game, which will kick off at 7 p.m., is the only one involving Tennessee teams.
