With one of the state’s top prospects and with two championships under its belt, Ensworth opened the season ranked atop The Tennessean’s Midstate Top 10.

Over the following 16 weeks, the Tigers did nothing to dispel that ranking, going undefeated to extend its winning streak to 21 games and claim a third consecutive Division II-AA title.

Senior tailback Corn Elder rushed for 2,639 yards — giving him a career total of 6,361, the ninth-best total in state history — and 39 touchdowns. The Tigers are also ranked ninth nationally in the USA TODAY Super 25.

1. Ensworth (13-0): Tigers claim third straight DII-AA title, post program’s first perfect season.

2. Beech (15-0): Second meeting with Columbia in four years yields second 5A championship.

3. Siegel (13-1): School’s best finish results in 6A semifinal berth, narrow loss to Maryville.

4. Brentwood Acad. (9-3): Prospect-laden Eagles advance to DII-AA semifinals, lose at MUS.

5. Mt. Juliet (12-2): Bears make second straight 6A semifinal appearance, fall to champion Whitehaven.

6. Brentwood (11-2): Under first-year coach Mark Pemberton, Bruins win 11-AAA crown, reach 6A quarterfinals.

7. Giles Co. (13-1): First loss costly for Bobcats, who fell to 4A champion Fulton in semifinals.

8. MBA (9-4): Big Red shakes off 1-2 start and makes it to DII-AA semifinals.

9. CPA (13-1): Back-to-back 3A semifinal appearances for Lions result in back-to-back defeats.

10. Dickson Co. (10-2): Cougars drop two of three games after 9-0 start, fall in 6A second round.
