SUAMICO – The D.C. Everest football team saw its season come to an end Friday with a 19-17 loss to Bay Port in a WIAA Division 1 Level 1 playoff game.
Bay Port’s Steve Minzlaff caught a 34-yard pass to set up a game-winning touchdown for the Pirates, who were the No. 3 seed.
The Evergreens took a 17-13 lead with 2 minutes, 16 seconds remaining on a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Sierakowski to wide receiver Alec Salzman.
But the Pirates responded in just four plays and Bay Port picked off Sierakowski to seal the game.
“I am very proud of the kids,” Everest coach Luke Coenen said. “We came out and played a very good football team and just had some breakdowns. But the kids played very well.”
“Defensively we played a really good ball game. That is a very good offense we played,” Coenen added.
That was Everest’s first lead in the game since Sierakowski hit Wyatt Brown for a 66-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.
Stratford 42, Auburndale 7
STRATFORD – Eli Temanson scored on pass receptions of 11 and 32 yards, and also returned a punt 63 yards for another score as the Tigers routed Aubundale for the second straight week, and advanced in the Division 5 field.
Jake Reif also returned a punt 42 yards for a touchdown, and Greg Belter had three interceptions — the last he returned 39 yards for a touchdown.
Travis Urlaub rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries to lead Stratford.
Edgar 56, Laona/Wabeno 0
EDGAR – The Wildcats’ defense allowed just 35 yards of offense on 44 plays in the Division 6 Level 1 game.
When they had the ball, Will Hannemann led a balanced rushing attack that racked up 242 yards. Hannemann scored twice for Edgar.
Phil Lemmer and Nehemiah Werner each caught 20-yard touchdown passes for the Wildcats as quarterback Tyler Kirsch was 3 of 4 for 60 yards.
La Crosse Central 38, Merrill 20
LA CROSSE – The Bluejays season ended in a Division 2 Level 1 game at La Crosse Central.
No other details were available.
Marshfield 31, Tomah 13
MARSHFIELD – The Tigers too advantage of turnovers to knock off Tomah in the Division 2 Level 1 game.
Riley Gebelein scored twice and piled up 197 yards on 18 carries to lead Marshfield to its matchup again Holmen next week.
The Tigers intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble in the game, while not turning it over themselves.
Division 3 regional
RIB MOUNTAIN – Andrew Studinski and Steven Studinski finished first and second overall, and helped Marathon capture the team championship — edging Rosholt by a point — as both programs qualified for the WIAA state meet.
The Edgar girls also earned a state berth by finishing second overall behind Laona/Wabeno. Jessi Krause led the Wildcats as she finished second overall, while teammates Lizzie Pospyhalla and Kira Dittman were sixth and 10th overall.
Assumption’s Haley Joosten and Cara Viviano were individual state qualifiers in the girls race, along with Marathon’s Emily Heil.
The Studinski brothers were among six Marathon individuals to finish in the top 20 overall as the Raiders finished with 54 points. Kyle Wallace was fourth overall to lead the Hornets, who had three of the top seven individuals. Auburndale’s Luke Haas was an individual qualifier, as was Owen-Withee’s Bryce Dziwulski and Spencer’s Donovan Fox.
