The Fairport Red Raiders and the Webster Thomas Titans have been the dominating teams in Class A Section V field hockey the last four years, with the two squads being pitted against one another in the last four Class A title games.
The stage was set again Thursday at Brighton High School, and the second-seeded Red Raiders answered the bell as Casey Luke scored the winner to hand Fairport a 2-1 over No.1 Webster Thomas and the Class A title.
Luke connected on a Kelly Consadine pass just two minutes after Consadine had tied at 1-1 for Fairport (13-5-1).
“I’m still in shock that we have done it twice in the past two years,” said the senior Consadine, who was also a member of the 2009 team that lost to the Titans.
“I was just in shock, I couldn’t believe it went in,” Luke said. “I just shot for the bottom right corner and it went in. To score the game-winner is the best feeling in the whole entire world.”
Thomas got on the board first when Michelle Matesic scored on a breakaway just 10:34 into the game. The game looked like it may stay 1-0 until Fairport took over in the final 13 minutes.
Though Consadine got the Fairport crowd on its feet, back-handing a rebound home with 13:11 to play and make it a 1-1 game.
“The goalie kicked it out and I grabbed it backwards and pushed it to the far right post,” she said.
The Red Raiders defense stymied a last-second cross from Thomas and it was their crown once again.
“Nobody expected it because we had a comeback team,” she said of Fairport’s five-loss road to the championship after losing eight seniors from last year’s championship team.
“The last year we looked up to the seniors a lot and this year they (the team) depended on us and it was a lot different perspective,” she said.
“Early in the season we didn’t know where this team was going, but they turned themselves around as a team,” said Fairport co-coach Sharon Starling.
