The fastest track in the state will help decide the fastest cross country runners in the state with the 2012 MHSAA cross country state finals scheduled for Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.
Action will start at 10 a.m. at MIS with the Division 4 boys race, with races scheduled each half hour throughout the day until the Division 1 girls race at 3 p.m.
Several area teams qualified by finishing in the top three squads at regionals. In boys action, teams heading to the state finals as a group include Gull Lake and Albion. In girls action, teams heading to the state finals as a group include Marshall, Gull Lake, Delton Kellogg and Homer.
Only two individuals from city schools qualified for the state finals: Lakeview’s Blake Wilson in Division 1 and Pennfield’s Audri Bornamann in Division 2.
The last area team to win a state title in cross country was the 2002 Lakeview girls’ team in Division 2.
The Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division girls’ swim meet is scheduled for Friday-Saturday at Harper Creek High School. Action starts each day at noon.
Lakeview finished first in the meet last season with 525 team points, followed by Harper Creek.
Following the league meet, swim and diving teams will next be in action for diving regionals on Nov. 13 with the state finals scheduled for Nov. 16-17.
