Female athlete of the week: McKenzie Holt, St. Cloud Christian

McKenzie Holt

Year in school/sport: Junior on the St. Cloud Christian cross country team.

Highlights: Holt took first in the Little Run on the Prairie on Thursday at the Sauk Rapids Invitational with a time of 14 minutes, 52 seconds on the 4,000-meter course, a personal-best on the course.
What has competing in athletics taught you? “You really need other people in your life encouraging you. But I think definitely the biggest thing is that it is such a blessing to be active. You see so many people unable to run, confined to a wheelchair. We’re really blessed to be able to run and we should try to use that blessing to the best of our ability for the glory of God.”
What’s your most memorable high school moment? “In ninth grade, my teammate Kristen Heinen made it to state with me. We had made a bet with our coach (Matt Swanson) that if we both made it, he would have to sing at the school talent show. He did. It was pretty funny.”
What’s your pre-meet routine? “It depends on how big a competition it is. If the race is important, I’ll try to get some rest and have an easy day running the day before. Otherwise, I’ll have one day where I go 10-to-15 miles, a couple of days of speed work, a day of hills and then lots of cross-training as well.”
What’s your most embarrassing high school moment? “I fell in a garbage can a couple of years ago at school. I just kind of tripped and it was a really big garbage can. It was kind of funny.”
Favorite food: Frozen blueberries or frozen juice.
Favorite movie: A Lot To Remember.
Favorite TV show: “I don’t really watch TV. If I do, it’s the news.”
Favorite Web site/video game: RaceberryJam.com. “I don’t play video games. I don’t even know how.”
What are your post-high-school plans? She’d like to become a personal trainer and to run competitively in college, possibly at a school closer to home. “And later in life, after college, I’d like to run marathons,” she said.
What’s next? St. Cloud Christian competes in the Royalton Invitational on Thursday and the Pierz Pioneer Stampede on Monday.
