FHSAA assigns schools to districts

By

The FHSAA released its tentative football district assignments Friday afternoon for the 2013 and 2014 seasons and no local coach was more surprised than East Lee County’s Scott Jones.

Jones’ Jaguars, which had won its first district title in 5A-11 and earned its first postseason berth, were listed as an independent. Meaning they would not be eligible for the postseason.

“Somebody messed up, huh?” Jones said. “That’s unbelievable.”

By midafternoon the error was somewhat corrected as the FHSAA confirmed that East Lee would be in the state series the next two years, but East Lee would have to wait on its district assignment.

Schools are allowed to petition the FHSAA to be reassigned in classification so none of the districts announced are final.

East Lee County athletic director Sarai Miller said she thought everything was set in October, but then received an email Wednesday afternoon showing that all East Lee sports were designated independent. FHSAA athletic assistant Will Adams reached out to Miller on Friday morning questioning East Lee as an independent and changed their status later in the day.

Jones said that FHSAA he talked to previously indicated his team would be in Class 6A meaning the Jaguars would either join three-team District 6A-13 led by Class 6A runner-up Naples or a seven-team district with returning playoff teams South Fort Myers and Island Coast.

Bishop Verot was the other local school with a big move as the Vikings dropped from Class 6A to 3A. Verot petitioned to move up to play more local public schools but went 3-7 and 1-9 over the past two seasons.

“For us I think it’s good,” Bishop Verot coach Phil Dorn said. “The position we’re in right now as a school it’s a good place for us to be.

“It’s a situation where our kids have the opportunity to make the playoffs.”

Fort Myers and Riverdale also moved up from a crowded Class 6A district that saw the Green Wave miss the playoffs despite going 8-2 to a four-team district that includes longtime rival Charlotte. Fort Myers beat Charlotte in Punta Gorda 36-31 last season.
